Does anyone else believe that we are slowly but surely destroying the English Language?
This is a typical texting conversation between me and one of my friends:
Him: Yo
Me: Hello.
Him: Sup
Me Nothing much, what about you?
Him: Nm lol
I mean really?! Is it just laziness? Or are we actually ruining a language that used to sound quite poetic when spoken. The majority of people at my school are surferes and they all speak as if they are stoned all the time. (which they very well could be.) Saying things like ”Dude! Are you goin surfin this weekend?! The waves are gonna be siiiiiiiiicckkk!” I just wish that it was “cool” to speak intellectually.
I completely agree.
Words used to be spoken with meaning and beauty.
Now most are just spoken with apathy and a acronyms.Exactly! I get so frustrated with this… I feel like I am the only person that doesn’t think it’s “dank” to talk like a dumb ass.
Ha. Well you are not alone. I mean, I’m no Shakespearean, but I do miss the art of an actual conversation…
I never really experienced that. I do believe that texting, instant messaging and email have certainly not helped our language. I used to use slang when online and i vividly recall writing essays that contained “u” and “r” but i wouldn’t even realize it…
No, they haven’t. Though I am an active participator in all. And same situation for me as well. Though, they were more close calls than not realizing it. I’d catch myself with “LOLspeak” in my rough drafts and catch it only when reading it aloud before finalizing it.
